The India-South Africa ODI series began amidst a tense atmosphere.
Indian fans were furious with coach Gautam Gambhir after South Africa had thrashed the Indian team 2-0 in a Test series on their tour of India after 20 years. It proved that they were the “Test World Champions”.
RoKo’s strength:
As a result of the Indian Cricket Board and coach Gambhir’s focus on building a team with new players, senior players retired from T20 and Test matches.
Only Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were keen to play ODIs and that too till the 2027 World Cup.
But the coach was not interested in the wishes of these two; on the contrary, after the team full of young players completely lost the domestic Test matches and lost the series, the attention of both the board and the coach was fixed on RoKo’s alliance. It was decided to remove Rogo’s alliance if it did not perform well in this series; but it turned out differently.
Series Analysis:
The first two matches confirmed that the Indian team lacks experienced bowlers. South Africa was almost close to matching India’s 349 in the first ODI. That too was a surprise as the tail end batsmen played a key role. This match too was also due to the contributions of senior players Rohit (57), Kohli (135) and Rahul (60).
In the second ODI, senior players Kohli (102) and Rahul (66) contributed significantly. But due to poor bowling, South Africa easily reached India’s target of 358.
In the third ODI, India scored 270 runs with the contribution of senior players Rohit (75) and Kohli (65). In this match, India’s bowling was match-worthy. One of the reasons for this was that India won the toss after 20 matches.
The Indian team was also at risk of losing wickets early in the series due to the lack of patience of young Indian opener Jaishwal in the first two ODIs.
The void in the form of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant was clearly felt.
KL Rahul:
KL Rahul took over as captain for this series due to Shubman Gill injury. His leadership qualities in this series were praised by critics as a mix of Virat Kohli and Dhoni. Because Rahul has gained enough maturity to play at the seventh or eighth position from being an opener. So, he has proven through this series victory that he has all the qualities to be a captain.
Solution:
This one-day match is a match where there is no strength and need to drive all the balls to the boundary line like in twenty-over matches; it requires wisdom and proper planning. Such matches require the experience of talented senior players and the joint efforts of young players who can play responsibly. Therefore, the team should be built accordingly. Through this, the young players will learn the experience and nuances of the game from the senior players and use it as needed to bring victory to the Indian team. Therefore, this article will make you realize that a team with senior players and young players is needed in the current situation.
